Following on from last week’s article explaining how to become a Green Standard Schools (GSS) member, today we’re sharing an important initiative GSS and its accredited schools are working on. Taking a remarkable step forward in environmental education, this project aims to raise awareness about one of our planet’s most vital yet overlooked ecosystems: seagrass meadows.
Seagrass meadows are marine flowering plants that form dense underwater habitats, stretching from tropical waters to the Arctic Circle. Despite covering just 0.1% of the seafloor, these remarkable ecosystems are responsible for up to 18% of the ocean’s organic carbon storage. They also serve as nurseries for marine life and help protect our coastlines from erosion and storm damage.
In a pioneering move for the international education sector, Green Standard Schools has partnered with Project Seagrass, an environmental charity, to produce educational posters in eight different languages. This multilingual initiative, coordinated by Languages United, brought together several GSS accredited language schools from around the world.
The project shows how language schools can contribute to environmental education. These free downloadable posters serve as valuable teaching resources, enabling schools to integrate environmental awareness into their language curricula.
With over 20% of global seagrass meadows lost since the late 19th century, raising awareness through education has never been more critical. Language schools are uniquely positioned to spread this message across cultural and linguistic boundaries, helping to create a more environmentally-conscious global community.
This collaborative eco-conscious project showcases how the international education industry can play a key role in conservation. Want to learn more about sustainable initiatives in our industry? Follow Schools & Agents’ Sustainable Wednesday series for further tips and insights.
