In last week’s Sustainable Wednesday article, we introduced our partners at Green Standard Schools (GSS), a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability in language education. Today, we’ll walk you through the process of becoming an accredited GSS member.
GSS believe that language schools can be powerful agents of environmental change. By joining their network, your school is committing to meaningful, measurable environmental improvements that can inspire students, staff, and the broader educational community.
Becoming a GSS member involves a structured, transparent application process designed to assess and improve your institution’s environmental practices.
Click the ‘Register’ button on the GSS website and fill out a simple application form. You’ll need to create a free account to do this.
The application also includes a detailed self-assessment form consisting of 50 Yes/No questions across various environmental practices. These include subjects like energy consumption and renewable sources, water usage, waste management and more.
You can get a maximum of 200 points, with 130 being the minimum requirement to qualify for membership. Note that each ‘Yes’ response requires verifiable evidence, such as energy consumption spreadsheets, electricity bill documentation or renewable energy supplier information.
Once you submit your application, the GSS team will review your self-assessment by verifying your submitted evidence and then determine your accreditation status. If approved, you'll receive:
GSS membership isn’t a one-time achievement but an annual renewal process. Each year’s assessment becomes progressively easier as you embed sustainable practices. Are you ready to go green? Start your school’s journey by contacting GSS directly at [email protected] today.
