Carmel College New Zealand continues to demonstrate how academic learning, creativity and values-based education can come together in meaningful ways. A recent achievement by a group of Year 9 students highlights the College’s commitment to future-focused learning and real-world relevance — qualities that resonate strongly with education agents supporting internationally minded families.
This term, Carmel College students took part in the New Zealand High School INTERFACE Student Minecraft Competition 2025, a nationwide initiative designed to encourage problem-solving, collaboration and digital creativity. The theme for this year’s competition, Sustainable Seas, challenged students to explore one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues through research, design and storytelling.
Using Minecraft as their platform, the Carmel College team — known as Team Project Ocean — designed and built a detailed sustainable coastal town. Their virtual environment included a responsibly managed fishing village, healthy marine ecosystems, pollution-free waters and innovative practices that promote ocean conservation. The project demonstrated not only technical skill, but also a deep understanding of sustainability concepts and global responsibility.
The team’s efforts were recognised at a national level, with Team Project Ocean achieving second place in the High School Category. Competition organisers praised the students’ work, describing it as an excellent entry and congratulating them on a result they should be proud of.
What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is the learning process behind it. Students spent the early stages of the project researching sustainable fishing practices, marine biodiversity and environmental protection. They then worked collaboratively to decide how best to translate these ideas into a virtual world that was both informative and engaging. This balance of research, creativity and teamwork reflects Carmel College’s emphasis on inquiry-based learning and collaboration.
Student reflections further illustrate the educational value of the experience. Team members spoke about the importance of working together, learning about topics they may not usually encounter in the classroom, and enjoying the process of building something meaningful with their peers. Importantly, the focus was not simply on producing an impressive build, but on understanding real-world issues and communicating them clearly to others.
For education agents, this project provides a strong example of the kind of learning environment Carmel College offers. Students are encouraged to think critically, engage with global challenges and develop skills that extend beyond traditional academic outcomes. Digital literacy, teamwork, communication and environmental awareness are embedded naturally through projects such as this.
Carmel College’s participation in national competitions also reflects the school’s commitment to offering diverse co-curricular opportunities that complement classroom learning. By engaging with platforms like Minecraft — familiar and motivating for today’s students — the College meets learners where they are, while guiding them towards deeper understanding and purpose-driven outcomes.
The Sustainable Seas challenge required students to include key elements such as a sustainable fishing harbour, healthy oceans with marine life, managed fishing zones and strategies to ensure clean, unpolluted waters. Team Project Ocean successfully incorporated all these components, adding imaginative features that brought their world to life and strengthened the educational message of their build.
Projects like this reinforce Carmel College’s reputation as a school that nurtures confident, capable and compassionate learners. Students are supported to explore contemporary issues, collaborate effectively and take pride in their achievements — qualities that are highly valued by families seeking a holistic education in New Zealand.
Agents looking to represent schools that combine academic excellence with character development, innovation and global awareness will find Carmel College a compelling option. The success of Team Project Ocean is just one example of how the College empowers students to learn with purpose and to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
