Stonyhurst Introduction

Happy New Year to all! We hope you had a wonderful festive season, and that you are ready to kick start 2020. We wanted to start the year by giving you an introduction to Stonyhurst Language School & Tennis Academy.

Located in the Northwest of England, Stonyhurst is set in 1,000 acres of countryside, on which one can find our outstanding, Grade I premises and all the exceptional facilities we provide. Whilst being set in the heart of the Ribble Valley, the College is very easy to reach, by rail and air, with Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds Bradford airports all within 90 minutes travel time by car.

Alongside the beautiful buildings and location, the Stonyhurst Language School had its British Council inspection in 2018, which resulted in an exceptional report. Featured in this report are aspects surrounding safeguarding under 18’s, care of students, accommodation, premises and facilities and leisure opportunities, amongst others. As a result, we were awarded a ‘Centre of Excellence’ status from the EL.Gazette. For further information on the 2018 inspection, you can view the full report online.

The report notes that we strive to offer quality education to the students who come to the Language School. The English Course is specifically designed for students aged between 10-16 years, to be an interesting, enjoyable and effective way for them to improve their language skills over a period of either two, three or four weeks. As far as we are able, young juniors (10 to 13 years) and juniors (14 to 16 years) are taught separately, with guaranteed small class sizes of no more than 12 students per class. During lessons, students focus on different topics such as sport, history, the environment and British culture. As part of the topics, students learn new language (grammar, vocabulary and/or functional language) whilst developing their receptive skills and improving their productive skills (speaking and writing). At the end of the course, students receive a progress report and certificate, at an awards ceremony, which not only focuses on academic achievements but also on their sporting success.

As well as the Stonyhurst Language School, the Stonyhurst Tennis Academy is a well-established programme aimed at offering professional tennis tuition each afternoon, alongside English tuition in the mornings. Training is held in our world-class indoor Tennis Dome and delivered by tennis professionals and coaches, who have competed in tournaments worldwide. The lessons focus on delivering technical, tactical and physical improvements as well as developing awareness, building stamina, strength, and agility. At the end of the course, all students receive an assessment, report, and medal for their efforts.

This is an overview of what we offer to international students. We are always happy to speak to both agents who represent students, and guardians, in more detail. You can reach us by email on summerschool@stonyhurst.ac.uk or telephone on +44 1254 827270.
