Black on White

Published Bernice on Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Be it a contract or an agreement or an invoice or a guarantee, that’s how most business is conducted - in black on white. And that’s all well and good and the way that it’s supposed to be, because, as the old saying goes, a verbal agreement isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

But then again, all business is conducted by people, and there is not a single person on this planet who is as simple as black on white. This is where you get the myriad of tints and shades in between, and that’s where the success in any business truly lies, because, as the old saying goes… when he took time to help the man up the mountain, lo, he scaled it himself.

Which is also all well and good, but what, exactly, does it mean?

Jo Buttigieg, trainer at BETC Malta, knows exactly what it means. His company offers courses in Business English to clients who wish to up their game when it comes to the language skills required in today’s global boardroom. The courses cover all the business basics – from breaking the ice and meeting new clients and giving presentations, to e-mailing and report writing, negotiating, networking and intercultural awareness – but it goes a lot further than that.

“It’s about people”, says Jo, who worked in the business for fourteen years, acquiring a Cert TESOL and Cert IBET along the way, before setting up BETC. “We want the focus to be the client rather than the course. What we don’t want is people to come in, sit down and take notes, leaving their personalities by the door. That’s not how business works, and that’s not how we work”.

The courses at BETC are interactive, and participation is key. Trainees are encouraged to take in what is covered, weigh it up and personalise it to their own needs. They are urged to apply what might work for them, and to question what might not, and to find alternatives.

“At the end of the day, we want our clients to enjoy what they’re doing, and to really see the value in what they’ve paid for”, says Jo. “I believe one hundred percent in what we’re delivering – I won’t go into too much detail here as I believe that the course speaks for itself – and what we do makes sense, and reflects the real world of business… the black on white, and all the tints and shades in between.”

Because, as the old saying goes, you get out of it what you put into it. And that’s worth so much more than the paper it’s printed on.
