As 2024 draws to a close, the English language teaching (ELT) community in the UK finds itself reflecting on the life and legacy of a true pioneer. Tony Millns, the former Chief Executive of English UK, has passed away at the age of 73, leaving behind his wife, Jill, and an indelible impact on the industry he helped shape.
Tony’s vision and leadership were instrumental in uniting the state and private English language teaching associations into what we now know as English UK. Under his stewardship, the association grew in stature and influence, becoming a cornerstone of the UK’s ELT sector.
A Legacy of Leadership
Tony retired in 2014, but his influence on English UK continues to resonate. Many of his appointees remain integral to the organisation, including current Chief Executive Jodie Gray. Reflecting on Tony’s impact, Jodie shared:
"Tony was an enormous inspiration and support to me, as my first 'proper' boss and my friend. He had faith in me, even when I didn't have faith in myself. I completely trusted his judgement, and in doing that, I've learnt how to trust my own. I still often think back to words of advice that he's given me over the years. His impact on my career and life has been nothing short of transformational."
Tony was more than a leader to his colleagues; he was a mentor, a confidant, and a friend. Those who worked with him often speak of his unwavering support, his strategic insight, and his genuine belief in the potential of others.
Tributes to a Transformational Figure
Since the announcement of his passing, tributes have poured in from across the ELT community. Many have taken this moment to reflect on Tony’s remarkable achievements and his profound contributions to the sector. From spearheading initiatives that enhanced the global reputation of UK ELT to fostering a sense of unity and purpose within English UK, Tony’s legacy is a testament to his passion and dedication.
