As international education professionals, we often find ourselves travelling across the globe to attend conferences, fairs, and other networking events. While these gatherings are brilliant for industry collaboration and promoting our institutions, we can’t ignore the environmental impact of frequent air travel. In this week’s Sustainable Wednesday article, we share five practical ways to reduce your carbon footprint while attending international education events.
Whenever possible, opt for non-stop flights, as takeoffs and landings account for a significant portion of an aircraft’s emissions. If this is simply not possible, try to book flights with a lower CO2 emission status by filtering your online search results.
If you’re able to get to your destination by train instead of air, this is a much greener option. Once you’ve arrived, explore eco-friendly transportation options, such as public transport, rental bikes, or ridesharing services that prioritise electric or hybrid vehicles. If renting a car is necessary, choose a fuel-efficient model.
Some independent organisations offer carbon offsetting programmes that allow you to calculate and offset the emissions from your flights. Consider participating in these initiatives, making sure to choose an effective scheme with an internationally recognised certification.
When booking your accommodation, look for eco-friendly hotels or b&bs that prioritise sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient lighting, water conservation measures, and recycling programmes.
Lastly, it’s helpful to travel light when flying to reduce the weight and fuel consumption of the aircraft. Additionally, carry reusable water bottles, utensils, and bags to minimise single-use plastic waste on your journey.
By adopting sustainable practices like these, we as an industry can collectively reduce the environmental impact of our international travels, while continuing to cultivate global connections and advance the field of international education.
