The FELTOM Story: Celebrating 35 Years of English Language Education in Malta

  Publisher : Bernice   21 January 2025 15:36

Since its establishment in 1989, the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta (FELTOM) has transformed the landscape of English language education in Malta. As we celebrated our 35th anniversary last December, we also had the opportunity to reflect on the journey that has made FELTOM the cornerstone of Malta’s ELT sector.

How FELTOM began

On December 5th, 1989, nine forward-thinking English language institutions came together at 220 St Paul Street, Valletta, to establish FELTOM. Under the initial leadership of Francis Stivala, the organisation laid the groundwork for what would become Malta’s leading language teaching association. The 1990s saw significant developments, including the establishment of the Monitoring Board in 1996 and its empowerment through ministerial authority in 1998.

Raising ELT standards through accreditation

A defining moment came in 2006 when FELTOM implemented its rigorous accreditation scheme. This initiative, overseen by successive chairs of the Accreditation Council, has maintained exceptional standards in academic excellence, student welfare, and service quality. Today, 14 accredited schools bear the prestigious FELTOM mark of excellence, serving students aged 5 to 85 from around the globe.

Shaping Malta’s legislative landscape

FELTOM’s influence reached new heights in 2015 when it was officially recognised as Malta’s sole ELT association. This milestone, coupled with the establishment of the ELT Council, cemented FELTOM’s position as the industry’ leading voice in Malta. Under the current leadership of Rebecca Bonnici as Chair and Jessica Rees-Jones as CEO, FELTOM continues to advocate for policies that advance the sector’s interests.

Looking to the future

As December 2024 marked FELTOM’s 35th anniversary, the organisation remains committed to its founding principles of excellence, advocacy, and continuous improvement. Through comprehensive marketing initiatives, rigorous quality assurance, and steadfast advocacy, FELTOM continues to position Malta as a top destination for English language learning, ensuring that the next 35 years will be just as impactful as the first.

FELTOM’s journey from a small group of visionary institutions to Malta’s authoritative voice in English language teaching stands testament to the power of dedication, collaboration, and commitment to quality education.
