In a recent Schools & Agents Live Broadcast, we spoke with Jessica Rees-Jones, FELTOM CEO, about the groundbreaking new Malta Agent Training Course (MATC)—an initiative that marks Malta’s first comprehensive certification programme for international education agents. This is the result of a fruitful collaboration between ICEF and FLTOM. Here are the key takeaways from our discussion with Jessica. 

Setting a new standard for agent training

The MATC certification, launched in collaboration with ICEF, is a significant milestone for Malta’s education industry. What began as a conversation at ICEF Berlin in November 2024 quickly materialised into reality by March 2025. This partnership merges FELTOM’s 18-year quality assurance experience and ICEF Academy’s global agent training expertise.

What makes MATC unique

The MATC certification distinguishes itself as:

• The first country-specific agent certification for Malta and the Mediterranean region.
• A comprehensive course covering not just English language teaching, but Malta’s entire education sector.
• A quality assurance tool that aligns with global standards from organisations like the British Council.

Course structure and content

In this six-hour online course, agents learn:

1. The ethics and standard for being a successful agent in Malta.
2. Malta’s geography, history, climate etc—developed with the Malta Tourism Authority.
3. About education in Malta across the ELT, vocational, and tertiary sectors.
4. All the necessary visa information and student support services available.
5. Insurance and practical considerations of studying in Malta.

Each module includes assessment quizzes to ensure comprehension and maintain quality standards.

Accessibility and cost

The course is designed for maximum accessibility. It’s free to do and can be completed online from anywhere in the world at your own pace. Once completed, agents can opt to receive their official certification for €295 through ICEF. 

Beyond the online certification

FELTOM is planning to enhance the programme’s value with familiarisation (FAM) trips for certified agents, including:

• Visits to all FELTOM-accredited schools.
• Cultural, historical and gastronomical activities.
• An elegant certificate presentation ceremony.
• Immersive experiences showcasing Malta’s educational offerings.
