Trine University students showcased their exceptional skills and innovative thinking at the first-ever Artificial Intelligence Maritime Maneuver Indiana Collegiate Challenge (AIMM ICC), demonstrating the institution’s commitment to preparing students for cutting-edge careers in technology and defence.
The AIMM ICC, hosted by Trine University and Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWC Crane), brought together six Indiana colleges and universities to compete in guiding AI-powered low-profile vessels through a series of complex tasks. Approximately 130 area high school students also attended the event to learn more about the projects and participate in STEM activities. Surpassing expectations, Trine’s team secured top honours in technical design and project presentation categories. Moreover, the university’s involvement in AIMM ICC went beyond the competition itself. Students worked closely with NSWC Crane to develop and manufacture the vessels and AI controller used in the challenge, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience.
This collaboration has yielded impressive results, with five Trine students accepting full-time positions at NSWC Crane upon graduation. John Shannon Ph.D, Trine University president, emphasised the significance of this achievement, saying “Our students have benefited greatly from their work with Crane. They’ve been able to work on real national defence problems, help work toward solutions, and, in the process, gain valuable experience to help prepare them for future career success.”
Trine University’s success in this inaugural event highlights its commitment to innovation and preparing students for the evolving needs of the defence industry, positioning the university as a leader in AI education.
