Technique, Tactics and Training: The 3T's at SUFC International Football Academy

  Publisher : Bernice   08 May 2026 06:57

Football in Malta is changing gradually, but with clear direction. What was once largely recreational is becoming more structured and focused on long-term player development, especially at youth level. Academies are placing greater emphasis on performance, planning and progression rather than just participation.

One example of this shift is at SUFC International Football Academy, where player development is built around three core areas: technique, tactics and training.

Technique is treated as the starting point. Sessions focus on helping players become more comfortable and consistent on the ball, with drills designed to improve control, passing and decision-making in different positions. SUFC IA also uses tools like GPS tracking and performance data to monitor workload and development. This allows coaches and players to see progress in a more objective way.

Tactical understanding is another key focus. Modern football requires players to read the game well and react quickly. Training sessions at SUFC IA often recreate match scenarios, encouraging players to think, adapt and make decisions under pressure. The aim is to build awareness of space, movement and timing, skills that are essential at higher levels of the game

The third element, training, brings everything together. Programmes are structured but flexible enough to meet individual players’ needs. Student-athletes follow development plans that include physical preparation, injury prevention, and recovery supporting both performance and consistency over time.

Beyond football, the Academy also places importance on education and personal development. Players are encouraged to build discipline, focus, and responsibility, qualities that matter both on and off the pitch.

SUFC IA offers a more structured pathway within the local football landscape, with opportunities for growth and exposure beyond Malta.

In simple terms, it reflects a broader shift: moving from playing the game to developing within it.
