The academic and administrative staff at the School of Business & Management would like to extend their wishes for a prosperous 2025 and as TS. Eliot said, ‘Every moment is a fresh beginning.’ So, here’s to new beginnings with all the challenges and benefits they bring, may we all learn and grow by facing them. And as we’re discussing new beginnings, the School of Business and Management (SBM) is currently offering a number of Foundation courses in preparation to courses that lead to a Bachelor’s degree and eventually to a Master’s degree, if one wants to continue one’s educational pathway.

Foundation courses play a crucial role in preparing students for the rigors of higher education, particularly when transitioning to a first degree programme. These courses serve as a bridge between secondary education and university level study, equipping students with essential skills and knowledge needed for academic success. Moreover, if a student has been away from academia for a number of years, a Foundation course helps one to adapt to a more modern learning environment and equips the student with the necessary tools to become an autonomous learner. 

The adjustment period during the Foundation Course gives students the confidents needed to face topics which might seem challenging when moving on to a degree level, as such courses focus on enhancing critical academic skills such as academic writing, time management, and independent research. Students can also address any gaps in their knowledge that may hinder their performance in their chosen degree programmes.

The main benefit of opting for a Foundation course is that students gain an introductory understanding and knowledge of their chosen field, which can be invaluable before committing to a specific degree path. This exposure helps them make informed decisions about their future studies and career aspirations. At Foundation level, students can decide to change their educational pathway and opt for a different course, which can be difficult and expensive to do, once one start reading for a first degree.  There is nothing worse than reading for a degree if your heart is not into it, and students might discontinue their studies because they lost interest and enthusiasm in the course they had initially chosen to pursue.

In addition to academic preparation, Foundation courses often highlight transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. These competencies are highly valued by employers and can significantly enhance a student's employability post-graduation.

Consequently, we at SBM strongly believe that Foundation courses are an essential stepping-stone for many students entering higher education. They facilitate a smoother transition into university life, equip learners with necessary academic skills, boost confidence, and provide a foundational understanding of their chosen field.
