Long after the finish line is crossed, some achievements stay with people because of what they represent. This year’s London Marathon became one of those moments for Wimbledon School of English, as Paul Greaves combined endurance, determination, and community spirit to raise vital funds for refugees rebuilding their lives in the UK.

After months of preparation, training, and fundraising, Paul crossed the finish line of one of the world’s most demanding and inspiring races, raising an impressive £2,262.05 for Breaking Barriers.

A marathon powered by community

Reflecting on the experience, Paul described the marathon as “incredible,” highlighting both the challenges and the overwhelming support that carried him through the 26.2 mile journey. “The crowds were unbelievable, the heat at times unbearable, but the camaraderie between runners, being able to see friends and family along the way and then at mile 14 the awesome Breaking Barriers support team got me through to the end.”

For anyone who has experienced the London Marathon, those words capture exactly what makes the event so special. It is not only about endurance. It is about community, resilience, and shared purpose. That same spirit was reflected in the fundraising effort itself. Paul’s sponsorship total came from 61 different people and organisations, demonstrating the collective support behind both his challenge and the cause he chose to champion.

Supporting refugees through opportunity

The funds raised will go directly to Breaking Barriers, a UK organisation dedicated to helping refugees rebuild their lives through meaningful employment, career guidance, and professional support. For those working within international education, the connection feels especially relevant. Every day, schools and agents help students adapt to unfamiliar environments, build confidence, and create new futures abroad. Breaking Barriers operates within that same human space of opportunity, belonging, and long term integration. Paul’s achievement highlights how strongly these values continue to resonate within the sector.

A proud moment for Wimbledon School of English

Paul also expressed his gratitude towards Wimbledon School of English for supporting him throughout the journey.

“Finally, a huge thank you to Wimbledon School of English for their incredible support over the past few months, not only by generously sponsoring me but for allowing me to take on this epic challenge.” That support reflects the culture many schools across the industry strive to build. One where professional excellence exists alongside compassion, wellbeing, and social responsibility.

Within international education, success is often measured through student outcomes and growth. Yet stories like this remind us that the impact of the sector extends much further into communities and causes that matter globally.

More than a finish line

Completing the London Marathon is a major achievement in itself. Doing so while raising over £2,260 for refugee support makes the accomplishment even more meaningful. For agents, educators, and partners across the international education community, Paul’s journey serves as a powerful example of how individual action can inspire collective impact. It is a reminder that the values underpinning international education do not stop at the classroom door.

Congratulations to Paul Greaves on an incredible achievement and to everyone who contributed towards this important cause.
