  Publisher : Bernice   17 May 2024 10:08

The University of Malta (UM) offers a unique opportunity for international students to immerse themselves in a vibrant academic environment through its visiting student program. For those whose English proficiency might not yet meet the requirements for full integration into UM’s academic life, the Malta University Language School (MULS) provides an essential stepping stone: the English for Visiting Students course.

Course Overview

Designed specifically for future visiting students, this course aims to elevate students' English language skills to a level where they can confidently engage in university lectures and academic activities. Prospective participants should have an Intermediate (B1) level of English at the time of application to maximize the benefits of the program.

Course Structure

The English for Visiting Students course spans approximately 8 to 16 weeks, offering intensive language instruction to boost students' proficiency. This preparation is crucial for ensuring that students can follow and participate effectively in their chosen courses at UM.

  • Start Date: Every Monday, providing flexibility for students to begin their studies at a convenient time.
  • Duration: The course runs for 15 hours per week, broken down into 3-hour daily sessions.
  • Class Times: Students can choose between morning (09:00 to 12:30) or afternoon (14:00 to 17:30) slots, allowing them to fit classes into their schedules.
  • Class Size: To ensure personalized attention and an effective learning environment, class sizes are capped at 14 students.

Achieving Success

Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a letter of achievement from the Malta University Language School. This letter not only attests to their improved English proficiency but also qualifies them to proceed with their studies at UM as visiting students.

Academic Integration

The visiting student program at UM allows for both semester-long and full academic year placements:

  • Semester Duration: October to January.
  • Full Academic Year: Ending in May.

During their stay, students can enroll in courses totaling a minimum of 8 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) and up to a maximum of 30 ECTS per semester. This flexible range accommodates various academic needs and goals.
