This week marks the sixth week of Kings Hall College’s Summer Programme. To date, our Summer Programme has welcomed over 140 young learners to study English at our summer campus. Our students all share one goal: to learn English in Manchester with the aim of making new friends along the way. We hope that our students have made unforgettable memories with their peers whilst studying English with us.
A dedicated team of teachers and administration staff have worked hard to ensure that our Summer Programme runs as smoothly as possible: our Summer School Coordinator, Baraa, has been hard at work preparing and organising the summer syllabus for our students; our Summer Programme teachers have all worked tirelessly to prepare fun and engaging lessons to help our students study English; our Student Services Department have worked hard to enrol our students onto their courses; and last, but by no means least, the final member of our Summer Programme Team is our Academic Intern, Ollie. Ollie has been working tirelessly to assist our academic staff with their duties, whilst also documenting everyday life at the summer campus. Ollie has provided an account of their duties at the summer campus to reveal a sneak peek into the ongoings of this year’s Summer Programme.
“There are three main parts of my work during this summer school. Firstly, I work as a teaching assistant in 6 classes to support teachers in managing their classes. I would go around classes to see if any students are left behind and need tailored help. Furthermore, I am an observer. I am sent to different classes to observe different classes and take notes on them, followed by reflecting on the observations and thinking about improvements and efficiency of classes. Lastly, I am also responsible for administrative tasks, such as assisting teachers with printing and preparing teaching materials.”
“In the summer school, students can learn a lot and improve a lot in different aspects. First of all, they can acquire more English skills during the summer school here, from vocabulary to grammar, from reading to speaking. Moreover, through living here with local students and interacting with local people, they expand their horizon and learn about local culture. More specifically, we organise a weekly activity focusing on a theme for students. For example, it focuses on podcasts this week, so students need to prepare a topic for their podcast channel and present it in front of everyone. The winner will have the trophy in their class for a week. This activity not only practices their English proficiency, but also encourages them to have a speech in front of the public. Therefore, it is an excellent chance for them to show themselves in front of their peers and teachers. There is an old saying: Practice makes perfect. By practising their English for four weeks in summer school, they can enhance their overall English capacity.”
Our Summer Programme will sadly conclude in the next few weeks, however, we will continue to offer our year-round courses at Kings Hall College for new students to enjoy.
