Caring Across Cultures: IDEA College Welcomes International Nursing Exchange from the Netherlands

  Publisher : Bernice   03 July 2026 21:05

Future healthcare professionals from Malta and the Netherlands came together at IDEA College for an Erasmus+ exchange built on a simple, universal idea, that the commitment to caring for others crosses every border.

Last month IDEA College opened its doors to students and lecturers from Hoornbeeck College in the Netherlands for an international Nursing Exchange Programme delivered under the Erasmus+ framework. Held under the theme Caring Across Cultures, the programme brought together the next generation of healthcare professionals from IDEA College and Hoornbeeck College to explore nursing and care practices side by side, while strengthening intercultural understanding, communication in English, and the exchange of perspectives drawn from two very different healthcare systems.

For an institution that places internationalisation at the heart of its vocational training, the visit was far more than a study trip. It was an opportunity for IDEA College students to learn alongside their Dutch peers, to test their professional English in a real working context, and to see how the principles they study in the classroom are applied in another country’s approach to care.

Learning that extends beyond the classroom

From the outset, the exchange was designed to be hands-on and collaborative. Over the course of the programme, participants took part in workshops, discussions, and group activities centred on nursing, care, leadership, and cultural awareness. The aim throughout was to create learning experiences that reach well beyond textbooks and lecture halls, the kind of experiences that shape confident, culturally aware practitioners.

That ethos was on full display when the two student groups moved from discussion into practice.

A day in practice at St Vincent de Paul Residence

A highlight of the exchange was a day spent in a genuine clinical setting. The visiting Dutch students were paired with IDEA College placement students at St Vincent de Paul Residence, one of Malta’s largest elderly care facilities, where they explored different wards, observed care practices first-hand, and gained real insight into the day-to-day realities of nursing and elderly care in Malta.

Working in mixed pairs encouraged the open sharing of knowledge, perspectives, and best practice between the two groups. It also brought the programme’s theme vividly to life: while the structures and systems of healthcare may differ from one country to another, the importance of compassionate, person-centred care is something both groups recognised instantly and shared completely.

IDEA College extends its sincere thanks to St Vincent de Paul Residence for its warm welcome and for hosting the students throughout this enriching experience, and to the students and lecturers from Hoornbeeck College for the enthusiasm, engagement, and openness they brought to every activity.

Why exchanges like this matter

For prospective students and the agents who guide them, the Caring Across Cultures programme is a clear illustration of what an IDEA College education offers: vocational training with genuine international reach, real placement experience in respected healthcare settings, and a learning environment that prepares students not just for a qualification, but for a profession that is increasingly mobile and international.

Exchanges like this one strengthen the partnerships that connect IDEA College with leading institutions across Europe, and they remind everyone involved of a truth that needs no translation, that caring for others is a universal calling. IDEA College looks forward to building on this collaboration and to welcoming more international partners in the future.
