From First Step to Doctorate: The Business and Management Pathway at IDEA College

  Publisher : Bernice   26 June 2026 08:03

Business and management sit behind almost everything. Whatever the sector, financial services, retail, hospitality, healthcare, the public service, someone has to plan, organise, lead and account for it. That universality is what makes a management qualification one of the most portable investments a learner can make, and it is why the field rewards people who keep building on what they know. IDEA College has structured its business portfolio to make exactly that possible: a single, connected pathway that begins at Level 4 and reaches all the way to a Level 8 doctorate.

Few routes show the value of a progression ladder as plainly as this one. A learner does not have to choose, on day one, between a short qualification and years of study. They can step on at the level that suits them now, gain something recognised at each stage, and decide how far to climb.

Where it begins: the foundation

The pathway opens at MQF Level 4, Certificate in Management (60 ECTS) with a 12-month duration on Part-time basis. This programme is designed for learners (school-leavers, career-changers, and people already working but seeking to formalise their experiential knowledge) who want a solid grounding in business before committing to a degree.

Climbing the ladder

The strength of the portfolio is that each qualification is built to feed into the next, so a learner is always building on credit and confidence already earned rather than starting again. Across the cluster, the ladder runs from Level 4 to Level 8:

  • MQF Level 4 - Certificate in Management - 60 ECTS – 12 months (P/T)
  • MQF Level 5 – Undergraduate Higher Diploma in Management – 120 ECTS – 25 months (P/T)
  • MQF Level 6 – Bachelor of Science in Management – 180 ECTS -  38 months (P/T) + 6 months Dissertation
  • MQF Level 7
  • Master in Business Administration 90 ECTS - 24 months (P/T) + 6 months Full Project;
  • M.Sc. in Management – 90 ECTS - 24 months (P/T) + 6 months Dissertation;
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Business of Fashion – 90 ECTS - 20 months (P/T) + 6 months Dissertation;
  • M.Sc. in Governance and Management - 90 ECTS - 20 months (P/T) + 6 months Dissertation;
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Insurance Studies - 90 ECTS - 24 months (P/T) + 6 months Dissertation;
  • Master of Science in Strategic Accounting Principles – 104 ECTS - 24 months (P/T) + 6 months Dissertation;
  • Master of Science in Retail Management - 20 months (P/T) + 6 months Dissertation
  • MQF Level 8 - Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA); 5 – 7 years (P/T, also by distance learning) with a taught component in the first two years delivered over 6 weekend schools

Taken as a whole, the ladder lets a learner see the entire distance from a first business qualification to the highest level of academic and professional achievement, and travel it at their own pace.

Careers at every rung

What makes the business pathway compelling is that it pays off at each stage, not only at the summit. Every qualification opens its own band of roles.

  • After the foundation and diploma (L4–L5): administrative, support and supervisory roles, such as office and business administrator, team leader, and junior positions in sales, marketing, operations or customer service.
  • After the bachelor’s (L6): professional and junior-management roles, including business analyst, marketing, HR or operations officer, account manager, and first-line manager positions.
  • After the master’s / MBA (L7): senior management, strategy and consultancy roles, namely department head, project or programme manager, management consultant, and routes into executive leadership.
  • After the doctorate (L8): the most senior strategic, advisory and academic roles, such as executive leadership, high-level consultancy, and university teaching or research.

Built for working professionals

Many of the people drawn to business study are already in work and looking to move up or change direction. Programmes are built with that in mind and they are run both full-time and part-time, so a learner can complete a programme of studies within a number of months or spread it across up to two years alongside a job. Programmes are delivered in a blended format that combines on-campus sessions with online learning, giving working learners a realistic way to keep studying without putting their job or family commitments on hold.

Finding the right starting point

The real advantage of a connected pathway is that it meets learners where they are. Someone new to the field can start at Level 4 and build from there; someone with existing qualifications or experience may be able to enter further up the ladder. Prospective students, and the agents advising them, are encouraged to contact IDEA College to map the route that fits their background and ambitions, from a first qualification right through to a doctorate. In a field this broad, the most valuable thing a college can offer is not a single course but a clear way up, and that is what the business and management pathway is designed to be.
