These programmes are a study leave for German workers to take time off from work and to participate in learning and training activities, including language training.

Literally, Bildungsulaub, means educational leave. And it is the legal right of employees to take paid time off from work to participate in recognised continuing education events. 

German employees are entitled to 5 days of leave every year to study at a recognised school while receiving their salary or they can also opt for 10 days of study leave every 2 calendar years.
