Health, social care and wellbeing in today’s world

  Publisher : Bernice   24 March 2026 14:01

Across Europe and beyond, societies are facing the combined pressures of ageing populations, rising chronic conditions and growing mental health challenges. Traditional models that focus only on treating illness are no longer sufficient; modern systems now recognise that physical health, mental health and social wellbeing are closely connected and must be addressed together.

This shift has created strong, sustained demand for professionals who can support individuals and communities in a holistic, person-centred way – whether in hospitals, care homes, community services, NGOs or public health organisations.

The BSc (Hons) Health, Social Care and Wellbeing at GBS Malta

GBS Malta’s BSc (Hons) Health, Social Care and Wellbeing is designed in line with these evolving needs. It is an MFHEA-accredited degree that brings together key areas such as health and wellbeing, social care practice, mental health, safeguarding, equality, and the social determinants of health.

Over three years of full-time study, students progress from core foundations in health and social care to more advanced topics in leadership, research and evidence-based practice. The programme structure balances theoretical understanding with applied learning, helping students develop the knowledge, values and skills needed to work effectively with diverse groups and vulnerable individuals.

Why Malta is a relevant study destination

Malta offers students an English-speaking, EU environment where many of the challenges discussed above – from ageing populations to chronic illness and mental health – are visible and actively being addressed through policy and practice. This gives learners the opportunity to study contemporary health and social care issues in a real-world context, within a safe and welcoming country that is well connected to the wider European region.

For international students in particular, Malta provides a setting where they can build global perspectives on health, social care and wellbeing while earning a European-recognised qualification.

The right kind of student for this programme

This programme is particularly suited to students who:

  • Are motivated by people-focused work and want a career with clear social impact.
  • Are interested in health, psychology, community work or social issues, but are looking for a broader route than medicine or nursing alone.
  • Can demonstrate empathy, patience, good communication and a readiness to work with individuals from different backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Are open to building long-term careers in health, social care, community services, NGOs or public health, with the flexibility to explore different settings over time.

Both recent school leavers and mature learners looking to move into this sector can find a strong pathway in this degree.
