Creating an environment where students can thrive requires more than excellent teaching. It requires accessible support, meaningful connections, and services that help students navigate the many challenges that can arise throughout their educational journey.
On 28 May 2026, GuardMe joined Georgian College to officially open the GuardMe Student Success and Care Centre at the Barrie campus. The new centre represents a significant investment in student wellbeing and brings together essential support services in one welcoming and accessible location.
Made possible in part through GuardMe's contribution, the centre reflects a partnership that has spanned more than two decades. It also demonstrates a shared commitment to helping students succeed academically, socially, emotionally, and professionally.
As student needs continue to evolve across higher education, the opening of the GuardMe Student Success and Care Centre offers an example of how institutions can create more connected systems of care that help students access support when they need it most.
The GuardMe Student Success and Care Centre serves as a central hub for student services at Georgian College's Barrie campus.
The space brings together six key areas of support under one roof:
Each service addresses different aspects of the student experience. Together, they create a simpler and more accessible pathway for students seeking guidance and support.
Rather than navigating multiple locations and departments, students can access a range of services through a single, welcoming environment designed to make support easier to find and easier to trust.
Students today face a wide range of challenges that often extend beyond academic responsibilities.
Many students are balancing coursework with financial pressures, health concerns, accessibility needs, cultural adjustment, career planning, and immigration requirements. For international students in particular, adapting to a new country and educational system can add another layer of complexity.
When support services are difficult to locate or understand, students may delay seeking help until challenges become more serious.
The GuardMe Student Success and Care Centre was created to address this issue by providing a clear starting point for students who need assistance.
It is a place where students can ask questions, access guidance, and connect with the right services before challenges become overwhelming.
This proactive approach reflects a growing understanding across international education that student success is closely linked to wellbeing, belonging, and access to support.
Speaking at the official opening, Suzie Addison Toor, Vice President for Student Success at Georgian College, highlighted the centre's purpose and impact.
She explained that the GuardMe Student Success and Care Centre provides a welcoming and accessible space where students can learn, connect, and thrive while receiving support academically, emotionally, socially, and professionally.
This philosophy is reflected throughout the centre's design.
Digital wayfinding tools help students quickly locate services, while dedicated staff members are available to provide guidance and personal support. The combination of technology and human connection helps create a seamless experience that prioritises student needs.
The centre is built on a simple but important principle: support should be easy to access before a student reaches a crisis point.
The opening of the centre marks another milestone in the long standing relationship between GuardMe and Georgian College.
For more than twenty years, the two organisations have shared a commitment to supporting student wellbeing and success. The naming of the centre recognises GuardMe's ongoing contribution to the student experience and highlights the value of sustained partnerships within higher education.
During the opening ceremony, GuardMe Chief Executive Officer Keith Segal reflected on the significance of the new space.
He noted that the partnership has always been rooted in a shared belief in supporting the whole student and that the centre reflects the care Georgian College has consistently provided both inside and outside the classroom.
The centre stands as a visible symbol of that shared commitment and demonstrates how collaboration can create meaningful outcomes for students.
Learning Services serves as an important first point of contact for students seeking guidance and support.
The team manages more than 2,000 student enquiries each semester through in person, telephone, and email channels, helping students access the resources they need to succeed.
Accessibility Advisors support students facing a wide range of barriers to education, including physical, sensory, medical, mental health, and learning related challenges.
During the 2024 to 2025 academic year, more than 1,500 students accessed Accessibility Services across Georgian College.
Adaptive Technology specialists provide training and support for assistive tools that help students engage more effectively with their studies.
These technologies can include screen readers, organisational software, and other accessibility focused solutions that support academic success.
Immigration Advising plays a particularly important role for international students.
The service provides guidance on permit renewals, maintaining legal status, and navigating complex immigration processes. In Winter 2026 alone, nearly 900 appointments were booked, demonstrating the demand for trusted immigration support.
Co op Consulting helps students gain valuable work experience while studying.
With approximately 3,000 students participating across nearly 50 co op programmes and more than 6,000 employer partners, the service helps students build practical skills, expand professional networks, and improve career readiness.
Testing Services ensures students have access to fair, secure, and accessible examination environments.
The team supports more than 2,300 tests during both the autumn and winter semesters, providing essential accommodations and assessment services.
One of the strongest messages shared during the opening ceremony was that student success extends beyond grades and academic achievement.
Georgian College Student Association President Shyla Tighe emphasised that students who feel supported are more likely to persist and succeed.
Her remarks reflected an important reality within higher education. Every student brings unique experiences, challenges, and aspirations. Effective support systems recognise this complexity and make care part of the everyday student experience rather than something reserved for moments of crisis.
The GuardMe Student Success and Care Centre has been designed with this understanding at its core.
The new centre highlights a growing trend across colleges and universities: the movement towards integrated student support models.
As institutions seek new ways to improve student outcomes, centralised support hubs are becoming increasingly valuable. They help reduce barriers to access, improve service coordination, and create more positive student experiences.
For international education professionals, the centre offers a practical example of how partnerships can strengthen institutional support systems while addressing the diverse needs of modern student populations.
The focus on prevention, accessibility, and connection aligns closely with broader sector priorities around student retention, wellbeing, and belonging.
The opening of the GuardMe Student Success and Care Centre represents more than a new facility. It reflects an evolving approach to student care that recognises the interconnected nature of academic achievement, mental wellbeing, accessibility, career development, and community belonging.
As higher education institutions continue to respond to changing student expectations and increasingly complex support needs, integrated care models like this are likely to play an important role in shaping the future of student success.
Through more than twenty years of collaboration, GuardMe and Georgian College have demonstrated how long term partnerships can create meaningful and lasting impact.
For students at Georgian College, the result is a welcoming space where support is easier to access, easier to understand, and available when it matters most.
