The future of English language teaching in the United Kingdom is taking shape, and education professionals across the sector now have the opportunity to influence what comes next. English UK has launched a consultation on the proposed UK ELT Sector Action Plan for 2026 to 2030, inviting organisations from across international education to contribute their views before the strategy is finalised.
The consultation forms part of the UK Government's International Education Strategy and is designed to identify priorities, opportunities and practical actions that will support the continued success of the UK's English language teaching sector over the next four years.
The UK ELT Sector Action Plan is one of several Sector Action Plans being developed under the Government's International Education Strategy for 2026 to 2030. Together, these plans aim to strengthen the UK's position as a global leader in education while supporting sustainable growth across the sector.
The wider strategy focuses on three key ambitions. These include strengthening the UK's international reputation in education, continuing to attract high quality international students from a broad range of countries, and growing UK education exports to £40 billion each year by 2030.
The English language teaching sector plays an important role in achieving these objectives by welcoming students from around the world and supporting pathways into further and higher education.

English UK is leading the development of the ELT Sector Action Plan through its role as a core member of the Education Sector Action Group. This government and sector partnership was established to help deliver the International Education Strategy by bringing together education leaders, representative organisations and government departments.
As the representative body for accredited English language teaching providers, English UK has been tasked with coordinating the plan for the ELT sector. The organisation is gathering feedback to ensure the final strategy reflects the experiences and priorities of those working across international education.
The consultation is open to a wide range of organisations involved in English language teaching and international education.
This includes English language schools, university language centres, pathway providers, education agents, awarding organisations, publishers and other stakeholders who contribute to the UK's international education offering.
By encouraging participation from across the sector, English UK aims to develop a plan that represents a broad range of perspectives and addresses both current challenges and future opportunities.

The proposed framework outlines several important areas that will guide the sector through to 2030.
These include supporting the Government's International Education Strategy, identifying opportunities for sustainable growth, developing stronger international partnerships, highlighting barriers affecting the sector and recommending practical actions for providers, government and partner organisations.
The plan will also establish clear measures to monitor progress and evaluate the impact of the actions introduced over the coming years.
Consultation responses will help shape the final recommendations submitted by English UK later this year.
The feedback will be used to assess whether the proposed priorities reflect the sector's most pressing opportunities and challenges, identify emerging issues, highlight any gaps within the current framework and determine which actions are most likely to deliver meaningful results by 2030.
Once responses have been analysed, the final UK ELT Sector Action Plan is expected to be published in early September 2026.
English UK has acknowledged that the consultation takes place during one of the busiest periods of the year for many English language providers. However, the organisation has emphasised the importance of gathering sector wide feedback before the final plan is completed.
The consultation survey takes between five and seven minutes to complete, making it a straightforward opportunity for organisations to contribute to the future direction of English language teaching in the United Kingdom.
The deadline for submitting responses is 14 July 2026. Complete the consultation survey here.
As global demand for English language education continues to evolve, collaboration between providers, government and industry partners will remain essential. The UK ELT Sector Action Plan aims to provide a clear framework that supports sustainable growth while strengthening the UK's reputation as a leading destination for English language learning.
For organisations working across international education, participating in the consultation offers a valuable opportunity to help influence the policies and priorities that will shape the sector for years to come.
