The ICEF Berlin Workshop 2017, held between 29 and 31 October this year, saw record numbers of participants as well as the launch of the world’s first education agent training course specifically focused on Ireland. The ICEF Berlin Workshop continues to be a cornerstone of the global education calendar, with several organisations such as ALTO, GAELA, IALC, and the British Council choosing to hold high-level meetings and receptions in Berlin alongside the workshop.

This year, 2 816 participants from 1 770 organisations representing 104 countries across six continents took part in the ICEF Berlin Workshop 2017. This represented growth across the board of 15% compared to the same workshop in 2016, with 12% of participants attending their first ICEF workshop this year.

Participants took part in an incredible 30 157 pre-scheduled and on-site meetings over two days, another record figure which marks an increase of 11% over the number of meetings held in 2016. The number of educators attending ICEF Berlin 2017 grew by 11% compared to 2016, with 1 232 representatives from 708 organisations.

On the agent side, 1 217 representatives attended from 918 organisations, representing growth of 18% and 15% respectively compared to 2016. Victorien Darcel, Director at Athletics Consulting in France, said: “ICEF Berlin is the perfect event to meet high-quality education professionals. I would recommend this event to any company seeking growth – it is extremely well-organised.”

This year’s event saw rapid growth in the number of work and travel professionals and service providers attending ICEF Berlin. Representation from service providers grew by 18% to 201 professionals from 86 organisations in total. Peter Miles, CEO at Unizest (UK), said: “The event was extremely useful for us and we both enjoyed it. We had nearly 90 meetings with various people – mostly education agents. We are now following up with those contacts. We both thought that, whilst the event was quite expensive, it was well worth the investment. I have actually been telling various people that it is probably the best organised and most productive event that I have attended.”

In addition to the programme of pre-scheduled meetings and an extensive one-day seminar series including 53 presentations by 81 expert speakers, ICEF also announced the launch of the world’s first agent training course focused specifically on Ireland as a study destination. This self-paced online course equips agents with the information and resources they need to help students seeking to live and study in Ireland, a fast-growing study destination.

Building on the success of the inaugural event in 2016, ICEF held the one-day “Destinations Meet Student Travel Forum” on October 29, showcasing the impact of student travel on study destinations. Organised in cooperation with StudentMarketing, this forum included seminars and interactive workshops aimed at city, regional, and national tourist board professionals interested in attracting more student travellers.

Social and networking events enjoyed by participants included a welcome reception and a workshop party both featuring live music, as well as the third annual football “International Student Recruitment World Cup”, sponsored by IMG Academy and international insurance.

On October 28, Lead 5050 hosted the first-ever Women in International Education Awards to celebrate our colleagues’ achievements in raising the profile of women in international education. ICEF’s Vice President Events & Logistics, Isabel Vogt, was one of the winners in the “Inspirational Woman of the Year 2017” category.
