Humboldt-Institut celebrates 70,000th student in Lindenberg

Published Lynne Farrugia on Tuesday, August 14, 2018

Learning German is becoming increasingly popular among teenagers and young adults worldwide.

One highlight follows another at German language school Humboldt-Institut. Last year the school celebrated its 40th anniversary and this year welcomes its student number 70,000.

Victoria from Switzerland arrived on Sunday for her first ever German course with Humboldt. As the jubilee student, she won a two-week German course at a Humboldt school of her choice for her next summer experience.

Thirteen-year-old Victoria already speaks some German and is looking forward to the following two weeks in Lindenberg. During the course she will improve her German together with 200 fellow students from 32 nationalities at the foothills of the Bavarian alps.

Memories of 1977

“When founding the school in 1977, I never thought it would become such a success,” states Norbert Güthling, president of the Humboldt-Institut, who remembers his first student in 1977 quite well. “The student was Dutch and upon arriving at the school he asked me, how many students were enrolled. When we told him that he was actually the very first student, he was quite surprised.”

But soon more students followed. The expansion of the school went along with the increasing enrollments. Additional course locations were added, where students from all over the world learned German during the summer months and year-round.

Today the Humboldt-Institut offers German courses in 17 locations all over Germany. Four of those schools – in Berlin, Constance, Lindenberg and Bad Schussenried – are open year-round. During summer the offer is increased with courses in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Munich, Vienna and many other cities.

The Lindenberg school

The school in Lindenberg, at the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, was opened in 2004 and has since been very popular among students. During high season in summer more than 200 students from all over the world learn German in Lindenberg. Most of them are housed in the school's residence on campus. Others opt for accommodation in host families. During the rest of the year about 50 students learn and live in Lindenberg. They are joined by the boarding students who attend the local high school (Lindenberg Gymnasium). With its numerous students of various nationalities the Humboldt-Institut brings an international atmosphere to the picturesque resort town of Lindenberg.

Fam Trips for agents in November

For agents who are interested in getting to know more about the various German language programs, the Humboldt-Institut is happy to announce its two annual Fam Trips following the ICEF Berlin workshop and visiting all year-round schools as well as selected summer course centers.
