Third and Final Day at the 7th ELT Malta Conference

Published Lynne Farrugia on Saturday, October 13, 2018

Following yesterday’s emotional award ceremony at the 7th ELT Malta Conference, a very big well done goes to Mary Abela from Alpha school of English for being nominated and winning the 5th Inspiring ELT Professional Award.

The Conference started on 11th October and came to an end on 13th October. Over 250 academic and non-academic school representatives, involved in the ELT industry came together over the last 3 days in order to continue their professional development. ELT Council Chairperson Dr. Daniel Xerri explained that, “The aims of the conference are to foster a culture of continuing professional development amongst educators and to improve teaching standards so as to ensure that Malta strengthens its international reputation as a quality language teaching destination.”

The final morning started off with a Plenary by Katherine Bilsborough on Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL): From Ancient Philosophers to Today’s Young Learners. This was followed by three talks:

- Setting up a Writers Workshop by Rebecca Portelli,

- Using Games to develop Speaking Skills with Early Years Groups by Helen Chapman and

- Key Questions for Early Years Foreign Language Learning by Amanda Davies

Several other workshops delivered by both local and foreign speakers, were held throughout the day, with the focus being on Young Learners and professional development for teachers. The latter has been carried out successfully throughout the last three days and as Ms. Sue Falzon, CEO for the ELT Council said, “Even though professional development is a mandatory requirement for teachers to retain their permit, the ELT Council works hard to encourage teachers to willingly participate in a culture of lifelong learning.”

Well done to everyone involved in the organisation of this informative conference and to all the speakers and participants who continue to make this conference a success year after year.
