English UK cautiously optimistic about Brexit white paper

English UK has cautiously welcomed the government’s White Paper on Brexit, released this week, but says there is further to go.

The paper’s sections on travel and free movement suggest reciprocal arrangements for UK and EU citizens to travel without visas for tourism and temporary business activity. It proposes a UK-EU youth mobility scheme to ensure young people can continue to enjoy the benefits of living in each other’s countries, perhaps similar to existing arrangements with Australia and Canada.

“We are encouraged to read the proposals around tourism and students, but we are waiting for more detail on this. An issue for our members is for under-18s to be able to continue to travel on ID cards without having to go to the trouble and expense of getting full passports. We will explore this further in our continuing discussions with policymakers,” said English UK chief executive Sarah Cooper.
