Eaquals Launches Teacher Award Scheme at Annual Member Meeting

Published on Friday, December 1, 2017

Eaquals members gathered in Malta for the association’s annual member meeting, which this year took place in St Julian’s on the 17th and 18th November. Two full days of professional development workshops were accompanied by networking opportunities and social events taking place throughout the Mediterranean island.

The conference was officially opened by Eaquals Chair, Justin Quinn who welcomed all Eaquals members and also thanked the ELT Council, Ministry of Education and Employment who supported the event. Association announcements and updates were then delivered by Eaquals Executive Director, Lou McLaughlin, before a presentation by plenary speaker Kevin Valenzia, of Pricerwaterhouse Cooper, which explored how language centres can adjust to global change.

In a change to the meeting’s traditional format, Eaquals Training for Excellence offered both Academic and Business & Marketing strands. Attendees chose from; Digital Marketing: tools, techniques and strategies with Caroline Moore, The Coaching and Mentoring Manager with Loraine Kennedy, Assessment: Evaluating & Designing Language Assessments with Elaine Boyd or Academic Management: tools, tips & techniques with Julie Wallis.

The conference also saw the launch of Eaquals new Teacher Award Scheme. The scheme, which is open to any language teacher who has been a classroom teacher for a minimum of three years and is a member of an Eaquals accredited institution, was created to honour exceptional language teachers at all levels and in all contexts. The main aim of the scheme is to promote and disseminate good practices in language teaching, to foster a culture of sharing and to appreciate those dedicated to the language teaching profession.

During the conference closing plenary, Daniel Xerri, Chairperson of the ELT Council, Ministry of Education & Training in Malta, highlighted the importance of promoting a culture of professional learning in schools. The conference dinner which followed took place in traditional Maltese style at Bianco’s Restaurant, located in the historic town of Mdina.

Reflecting on the event, Lou McLaughlin, Executive Director of Eaquals said: "A wonderful few days where we were welcomed by all our Maltese accredited schools and the ELT Council, Malta. We had the opportunity to once again share best practice within the Eaquals community and delve into various strands in even more depth".

Attending the meeting, Angela Signorastri, Academic Director of British Study Centres, described the event as “A most stimulating and insightful two days where I felt I have genuinely built up new skills. I look forward to passing on the knowledge to key members of staff and spreading the wealth around a little.”

The next Eaquals event is the annual conference, which will be held in Prague, 26-28 April. The event is open to both members and non-members.
