ELA Senior Courses for travellers aged 50+

Published Bernice on Monday, July 30, 2018

‘It’s never too late to learn a language’, they say, and at ELA Malta we prove this every day. With thirty years of experience helping more mature learners reach new linguistic heights, it’s safe to say that we have you covered!

Who are these courses for?

Our Senior Courses are for students who are over the age of 50 and who might not necessarily need English for work or education, but need English to help them on their travels, to read books, to watch TV and films, to help them retire in an English-speaking-country, all while also learning about the culture and history of Malta. During their stay with us, students will not only focus on their language skills, but will also get to explore the island, make new friends and practice their English while having a fun and relaxing holiday in sunny Malta.

  • FUN FACT!!
  • Our eldest student on this course was 89 years old!

What makes senior courses different from the rest?

Other than the obvious age difference in our course participants, our Senior courses are designed to reflect the needs of our students. Unlike teenagers or young adults, Senior Courses are made for people do not need to worry about things such as workplace English, Academic English, or anything as heavy as that. This means that the material used is different, the language taught is different, and the pacing of the course is much less intense.

Why ELA Malta?

ELA Malta is one of the few schools that actually runs 50+ courses all year round. The maximum number of students in class in summer is 10, while in winter that goes down to 8. These small numbers guarantee more individual attention from the teacher, but also guarantee more opportunities to speak (especially since the main focus of these courses for mature adults is on conversation and verbal skills). Many of our students on these courses also like to combine their lessons with a stay at a host family, in order to get a taste of daily life in Malta and to experience ‘Daily life’ in English. With all of our host families being located a comfortable walking distance from the school, it’s hard to think of reasons not to do so!

On our Senior Courses our teachers try to integrate topics such as local culture and traditions, places of interest in Malta, and they also try to combine these topics with the season. For example during the summer they would speak about local village festas; during Easter/Christmas they would speak about those specific traditions which are associated with these periods etc.
