LAS POSADAS: Las posadas are like small parties that happen every night for nine nights starting on December 16th. A Posada consists of the following:

- “Los Peregrinos”  who  could be real people, or figures of ceramic representing: Mary and Joseph, a donkey, angels, etc.

- “Las Piñatas”   which for this time should have the shape of a star, and it is filled with candies or fruit of the season.

- Food like “medias tortas”, which are pieces of bread with beans and cheese.

- “El Ponche” which is a drink for this time of the year made with fruit of the season.

LAS CALENDAS:

- “Las Calendas” are not exclusive for December, although they are nicer and prettier that the rest of the year.

- “Calendas” are like parades with music, and firewotks.

- “Toritos” (little bull), but they are not real, they are guys running and holding in front of their heads a framework representing a “bull” but it has fireworks all over. It is so much fun to be around and try to escape from the fireworks.

- “Los Monotes” which are giant paper maché puppets with arms that move in any direction, attracting the attention of everyone marching in the parade. They dance and make turns. Some of them represent famous people of Oaxaca. When I was a kid, I was very scared of them. Now I love them, and I think kids are not afraid anymore.

- “Las Marmotas”.- They are like real big white balloons, they are very heavy and a man usually holds it dancing and turning it around. It usually has something writing.
