Published Bernice on Thursday, October 11, 2018

The 7th ELT Malta Conference kicked off this morning with a Pre-Conference event that consisted of 5 talks given by 4 different international speakers and researchers on the theme of "Multiple Perspectives in ELT".

Dr. Daniel Xerri, Chairperson of the ELT Council welcomed particpants first thing in the morning, and soon after Ms. Gaby Calleja, from the Human Rights and Integration Directorate within the Ministry for European Affairs and Equality spoke about the Maltese Government's commitment towards promoting gender equality across Maltese society.

Following the opening address, it was time for the first talk by Dr. Thorsten Merse from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat in Munich, Germany who focused on "Challenging ELT's LIP-Service to Diversity: The Queer case of LGBTIQ* Issues. A short break followed Dr. Merse's talk, which allowed participants to get to know the conference speakers and share ideas in a more informal manner over coffee.

The next sessions were as follows:

Angelos Bollas's session was entitled: "Homonorma....what? Spilling the tea about LGBTQI+ in ELT"

David Valente from the Anglo Mexican Foundation spoke about: "13 reasons why we need to tackle homophobic bullywing when teaching upper secondary"

Thorsten Merse had another session entitled: "Teaching with a Queer lens: from Texts to Tasks"

The last session was given by Katherine Bilsborough, an ELT author and teacher trainer who has written more than 30 course books as well as online courses for the BBC and the British Council, and focused on: "Why isn't my coursebook more gay?"

The 7th ELT Malta Conference is being held at the Intercontinental Hotel in St. Julian's, Malta between the 11th and 13th October 2018. Continue watching this space for more updates from this event over the coming two days.
