The first ICEF Central Asia Focus held in Kazakhstan

Published on Tuesday, April 25, 2017

On March 13-14, 2017 ICEF hosted 149 participants at its first ICEF Central Asia Focus event in Almaty, Kazakhstan. During the one-and-a-half-day workshop, 110 organisations from 24 countries worldwide conducted 944 pre-scheduled business meetings. 18% of participants were attending an ICEF event for the first time.

Central Asia is increasing its importance in the international student market. The college-aged population will expand considerably over the decade, and this is expected to fuel continued growth in outbound numbers. In Kazakhstan, the government hopes that by 2020, at least 20% of students, either via scholarship or self-funding, will spend at least one academic semester abroad. Such growth invites international educators worldwide to expand their reach and enter new markets.

The ICEF Central Asia Focus welcomed 59 educators from 19 countries. The institutions represented at the event included universities, language, secondary and boarding schools, as well as multi-sector, vocational, and training institutes. "Excellent event. Surpassed all my expectations regarding quality and quantity of meetings," said Yana Immis, Business Development, New European College GmbH, Germany.

In addition, the ICEF Central Asia Focus hosted 83 agents from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan. An impressive 25% of all participating agents were first-timers to an ICEF event.

"I'd like to express my deepest gratitude for organising your workshop in Almaty! We are so impressed by your team's professionalism and seamless organisation. The KAEA Team will always be happy to support your future events," said Zhanna Mendybayeva, Executive Director, KAEA (Kazakhstan Association of Educational Agents), Kazakhstan.

The Agent Focus started with two seminars on "Student Recruitment from Central Asia - Azerbaijan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan" and "The Study Abroad Market in Kazakhstan". The programme also included meals, refreshment breaks and two evening receptions for further networking opportunities.

The next ICEF Central Asia Focus will be held in March 2018, at the Ritz-Carlton in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Visit http://www.icef.com/en/workshops/icef-central-asia-focus/ for more information
