Ray Spiteri IH Malta

In today's interview, we had the pleasure of talking to Ray Spiter, Head of International House Malta. He gave us some very interesting information about their school, location and also about their exclusive Young Learners Programme.

If you had to describe IH Malta in 3 words, what would they be, and why?

Small, friendly, effective  -  there’s no denying the fact that ours is a small school, however, this comes with benefits.  Students in our school are not just a number, everyone is known and addressed by name.  This not only creates a friendly and ‘family’ atmosphere, it is also an effective tool that gives students a sense of belonging, allowing them to relax and enjoy learning which, for an adult, becomes tougher as the years go by.

How long has the school been established for?

The school was first set up in Gozo, back in the early years of this century. The operation was moved to Malta more than ten years ago and the current management took over the running of the school in March 2015.

What courses do you specialise in?

Teaching English as a foreign language, more than any individual course, is a ‘speciality’ that is synonymous with the IH brand.

Now that summer is round the corner, are you expecting any Young Learners? What are your Young Learners courses like?

We run a rather exclusive Young Learners Summer Programme at our annexe within the 4* Paradise Bay Resort which is situated at the northern most tip of the island.   The Programme kicks off on the second weekend of June.   For our young students, and sometimes parents and guardians who accompany them, our Programme offers much more than English tuition.  They get to enjoy kayaking, trips by power boat to the nearby Comino island with its famous Blue Lagoon, night hikes, beach barbecues, cultural visits…. We offer no fewer than twelve different locations outside campus, based on a three-week cycle.   This is not to mention the daily activities that are organised within the Resort itself.   The list of returning students keeps growing, testament to the popularity of this upmarket ‘summer camp’.

Can you tell us something about Malta as an ELT destination?

Malta is considered as a top-quality English language teaching destination and is the first country to enact legislation to regulate the EFL industry.  The various policies implemented by the EFL Monitoring Board guarantee quality English language teaching.  These measures ensure that students who choose to study English in Malta benefit from a top learning experience combined with the unique culture and heritage the country has to offer.

What are IH Malta's unique selling points?

USPs…. honouring the tried and tested ethos of the IH brand, with highly qualified teaching staff, personal attention to student requirements or requests and always ready to accommodate; location of the main school and Student Residences within a few minutes’ walking distance of each other, with close proximity to all amenities: shops, bus routes, a sandy beach and the popular St Julian’s vibrant night scene; an exclusive, all-inclusive, Young Learners Summer Programme (from age 8) set within a 4* Resort with 24/7 supervision and daily excursions and activities.
