Published Bernice on Tuesday, September 25, 2018

El Paso is home to one of the best schools in the United States, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). In 2015, Washington Monthly Magazine ranked UTEP #1 among all US universities in the social mobility category for its success in helping students achieve the “American dream.” The university has a population of nearly 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

UTEP sports teams are also very successful. The university plays at the Division 1 level, the most competitive collegiate level in the United States. While in El Paso, students can see great sports in action including football, basketball, volleyball, and more.

Sports and Stadiums

UTEP SUN BOWL STADIUM

American football is extraordinarily popular in the southern United States. UTEP is a big part of this tradition and many UTEP players go on to play in the National Football League. Every year, at the end of December, students can see the Hyundai Sun Bowl, which takes place at the UTEP Sun Bowl Stadium.

DON HASKINS CENTER

In December, UTEP hosts its annual 2-day basketball tournament, the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, where top-tier university teams compete. The Don Haskins Center, known as “The Don,” is one of El Paso’s top entertainment venues and has hosted famous singers, bands and comedians.

SOUTHWEST UNIVERSITY PARK

With nearly 10,000 seats, the stadium at Southwest University Park is the place to see real American baseball. Enjoy a hot dog and a drink and learn about America’s favorite pastime and the El Paso Chihuahuas, the local baseball team.
