Pre-Conference Event at the 6th ELT Malta Conference

Published on Thursday, October 12, 2017

The 6th ELT Malta Conference has started this morning at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valletta, Malta. This event will take place between today, the 12th of October and the 14th October. It is an event which is aimed at members from within the academic departments at English Language schools in Malta as well as teachers of English in Private, Church and State Schools.

This morning's event is actually the Pre-Conference Event which consists of two sessions delivered by the renowned name in ELT, Gerard McLoughlin. Gerard has taught English and trained teachers in many countries around the world. He is also a CELTA and DELTA trainer at IH Barcelona and a CELTA Assessor. His first talk this morning was on "Triangular Development" and focused on empowering teachers to be innovative in the practices and develop their teaching. This would, in turn, develop learning in the classroom. Teaching is a field in which professional development is extremely important and for this reason it is imperative that teachers take responsibility for their own training.

Following the coffee break participants went back into the Bellavanti Room for the second session which is being held right now. The session is entitled "The 'Eyes' have it" and focuses on how teachers can help students to interact and learn from online resources. The workshop is currently focusing on the areas of disability, mental health issues, women's roles and bullying.

After lunch the day will continue with various industry talks by local and foreign speakers which will be held simultaneously giving participants the opportunity to choose which sessions they wish to attend based on their main areas of interest.

The chosen theme for this year's ELT Malta Conference is "English for 21st Century Skills". Speaking about the theme, Sue Falzon, CEO of the ELT Council told us that "it is very important for the ELT Profession to keep abreast with technology and current changes, and also to keep updating the ELT Teaching Methodology so that the quality of ELT Teaching in Malta remains of a very high standard for the benefit of all the English Language Learners."
