SEAL Christmas Package

Published on Thursday, October 05, 2017

Gozo is not only worth visiting during the hot sunny days of summer but in December the Island of Joy indeed steps up to make it one of the most beautiful months of the year. The town of Victoria and main village squares light up with decorations, while angelic choir singing and traditional scenes reveal the island’s true craftmanship. Roaming around Betlehem in Ghajnsielem, an area transformed into a nativity village and providing a cove where culture and traditions intermingle, is a must. Hence why not opt for this ideal combination of English learning and cultural immersion during this magical time of the year?

Your cultural experience during your stay

Whilst remaining rooted to religious grounds, Gozo’s Christmas celebrations have embraced modern and western overtones so there is a bit of everything going on during this season. Here is a brief overview of what one can see when visiting during this wonderful time of the year:

  • The Gozo International Choir Festival

One of the most important and multicultural events of the season, this festival brings together various choirs from different parts of the world. Throughout the season there will be numerous other Christmas concerts by different choirs, bands and musical ensembles.

  • The Christmas Lights

In Gozo Christmas is indeed a celebration of light. Not only will many houses be decked out with many decorations and lights, but the streets will be a real feast for the eyes. And speaking of light, the typical Gozitan village of Santa Lucija will be holding a traditional Candlelight Festival.

  • Christmas Markets

Traditional artisanal markets will be held in various villages. These markets are a great opportunity to acquire some genuine authentic products! Lunzjata Valley will also be transformed into a natural Christmastide scene.

  • Cribs

Gozo’s top Christmas tradition is the representation fo the nativity scene. Betlehem in Ghajnsielem is a life-size crib, constructed on 20,000 square meters of fields on a stretch of land known as ‘Ta’ Passi’. The atmosphere is simple and unique, with horses turning mills, villagers going about their jobs, animals roaming in their space and a poor unknown couple tending their newly-born in a grotto. It truly promises to bring the timeless Christmas story to life as never before.

  • Food

You can never talk about the Maltese Islands without mentioning food and the Christmas season is surely no exception. Among the traditional desserts one finds the Treacle Ring (Qaghaq tal-Ghasel) and the traditional coupe de grace, hot Chestnut and Chocolate beverage (l-Imbuljuta tal-Qastan) made of cocoa, chestnuts, cloves and citrus zest.
