Eddie Byers Scholarship reopens

Published Bernice on Thursday, May 24, 2018

The second round of scholarships in memory of English UK’s late chief executive are open to applications.

UK-registered charities can apply for up to £2,500 for specific projects which will “enrich and support individuals and communities through English language teaching”, and the fund will award up to £10,000 in this current round.

In 2017, the scholarships supported four projects helping refugees in UK cities.

“Eddie’s family and colleagues were delighted that scholarships in his name were able to touch the lives of some of the poorest people in this country, helping them to integrate into their communities and use their skills to give something back to the UK,” said Helen Kind, English UK’s lead on corporate social responsibility.

“We encourage applications from as many charities as possible and would like members and the ELT community to spread the word for us. We want to continue this for as long as possible, so we are planning to start fundraising again very soon.”

The winning projects from the 2017 Scholarships used their awards to buy teaching materials suitable for adults, expand teaching facilities, and provide specific reading support and help to achieve Ielts levels needed to access UK education.

- RefuAid in London helped refugees to get qualifications for work and education, including Ielts, often working with English UK members.

- Oasis in Ipswich used its grant to buy books and cover the expenses of its volunteer teachers who give people of 33 different nationalities the language skills to integrate into the local community.

- Bristol Refugee Rights funded a specific project to support reading skills, including a crèche to allow people to attend, and to buy reading material.

- Asylum Link in Liverpool, which teaches English to around a hundred people a week in a former priests’ house, renovated a teaching room and purchased teaching and reading material more suitable for adults.

The closing date for 2018 applications is 31 May.
